When you’re next atop the porcelain throne, be wary of where your waste ends up after flushing – blocked drains are becoming ever more prevalent with a rise in luxury toilet products.

Soft and Plush, but Hard to Flush!

When it comes to new technology for the toilet, the quest for the softest, thickest roll for your rump sits high on the list of priorities – you’ve got to treat yourself where it counts. However, the cost of comfort can be at the expense of your plumbing system.

Even worse than the aloe-infused 4-ply you just bought are the recently introduced wipes that are filling up our supermarket shelves. If you’re living in an older home with low-flow toilets or old cast-iron pipes and using these products, you’re basically wishing a blocked drain upon yourself. Old metal pipes develop spurs that catch and hold onto the tissues and wipes; low-flowing toilets have less water to push the waste down and through the pipes, causing blockages.

The wipes are a definite cause for concern. Those working for our waterways are claiming that, along with women’s sanitary products, condoms and dental floss, toilet wipes are putting proverbial spanners in the works at pumping stations. They’ve advised that instead of flushing toilet wipes, that you place them in the trash after use, instead of in the toilet bowl.

US toilet paper company Irving Tissue has taken the complaints and pleas of plumbers and waterways workers on board and have come up with a toilet paper that promises to be more gentle on plumbing systems while not compromising comfort – the Majesta e-z flush. However, while Australian shores are lacking in this magical loo roll, we have to train ourselves to be more thoughtful about the way we waste in order to prevent unnecessary accidents from occurring.
